Most home networks were set up once, years ago, and never touched again — a router plugged in near the front door because that's where the cable came in, and everyone just working around whatever coverage that gave them. If it's stopped being good enough, here's how to figure out what's actually needed.
Signs a quick fix will do it
If the network mostly works but has specific, consistent problems, you probably don't need new hardware — you need better configuration.
- One room always drops out, but the rest of the house is fine
- The connection is fine in the evening but slow when everyone's home during the day
- It works until the router's been on for a week or two, then needs a restart
- A new device (a smart TV, a games console) never connects reliably, but older ones do
These are almost always about placement, interference, or settings — not the equipment itself being inadequate.
Signs it's time for new equipment
- Your router is more than 5–6 years old and doesn't support modern Wi‑Fi standards
- No amount of repositioning fixes a dead zone in a specific room
- You've added far more devices (smart plugs, cameras, multiple laptops) than the network was ever set up for
- You're paying for fast internet but never seeing those speeds anywhere in the house
A single router simply has a physical limit to how far and how reliably its signal reaches. Past a certain point, no configuration change fixes a coverage problem — the house needs more than one access point.
The middle ground: mesh systems
For most homes with a dead zone or two, a mesh Wi‑Fi system — multiple small units placed around the house working as one network — solves the problem without a full rebuild. You keep one network name, walk from room to room without dropping connection, and coverage extends to wherever you place a unit.
It's not the right answer for every situation (a single-story flat with a centrally placed router usually doesn't need one), but for multi-story homes or anywhere with thick walls, it's often the most cost-effective fix available.
What we actually check
When we look at a home network, we're checking:
- Where the router is placed relative to where you actually use the internet
- What's interfering with the signal (thick walls, metal, other networks nearby)
- Whether the router's firmware and settings are current
- Whether one router is enough, or the space genuinely needs more than one access point
